FUNDING PRIORITIES & THE GRANTMAKING PROCESS

The BBF has a strong history of supporting programs that advance access to legal services, improve fair administration of justice and help expand public understanding of the law. BBF grant making revenue comes from three sources: the Massachusetts IOLTA Program, the annual John & Abigail Adams Benefit, and the BBF’s own funds.

The BBF has a Grants Committee consisting of 13 members, appointed by the BBF President, which reviews grant applications during the annual grant cycle and makes funding recommendations to the Board of Trustees for approval.  Members of the Grants Committee are members of the legal community who have demonstrated 1) significant involvement in community service, and/or pro bono activities and 2) a significant knowledge of and commitment to the legal services community of Greater Boston.  They are drawn from all sectors: private bar, corporate counsel, legal services and academia.

Because of the individual backgrounds of its members as well as the collective knowledge of the committee and information obtained by staff, the BBF Grants Committee is able to make funding recommendations based on an analysis of overall community need, focusing not only on unmet current need but also emerging issues facing low-income individuals in Greater Boston.  Through its Grants Committee, the BBF is able to strategically direct resources and funding to areas and organizations that effectively address the greatest needs.

For 2012 , the BBF awarded $1 million in grants to 24 legal services providers through IOLTA funds, the Adams Benefit proceeds and the BBF's own funds. To read the press release, click here.
